KIPP Academy Nashville (KIPP Nashville) opened in July of 2005 to serve youth from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Nashville.   Between 80-90% of its students are from families living in poverty.  Students enrolling at KIPP Nashville on average score three years below grade level on standardized reading, language and math tests, and have less than a 20% chance of attending college and breaking out of the cycle of poverty.  The mission of KIPP Academy Nashville is to cultivate the character and academic skills their students need to succeed in rigorous high schools and colleges, and to become responsible and productive citizens.   This grant will support the salary and benefits of a mental health therapist and related supplies to address the mental health needs of the students it serves.  225 out of 300 (75%) of KIPP Nashville students will close individual achievement gaps by making 1.5 to 2 years of academic growth measured by standardized tests scores at the beginning and end of the school year.  48 of 80 students (60%) identified as struggling with at least one of the following areas - depression, anxiety, anger, disruptive behavior, and negative self-concept - will improve their score on one or more of the Beck Youth Inventories by at least 2 points.  58 of 90 students (65%) identified as struggling with low personal resources and high vulnerabilities will improve their score on the Resiliency Scales for Children & Adolescents by at least 2 points.
