Nashville CARES
Started in 1985, Nashville CARES' mission is to educate the community for increased understanding and prevention of HIV transmission, to advocate for responsible public policy, and to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV disease and their families. CARES addresses the rural as well as urban dimensions of the HIV epidemic, connecting individuals living with HIV/AIDS with care and support. This grant will support a portion of the salary and benefits for personnel related to the Rural Mental Health Program. 43 (85%) of 50 rural individuals living with or affected by HIV disease attending support groups will report one or more of the following: a reduction in feelings of disease-related isolation, an increase in knowledge of available resources, and/or an increase in linkage to mental health and other community-based support services. 26 (85%) of 30 rural individuals living with or affected by HIV disease confronting mental health issues will improve their emotional stability and security by developing and using coping skills in one or more of the following areas: crisis management, social interaction, family interaction, grief resolution, health management, mental functioning, meeting basic/survival needs, and/or HIV risk reduction.
