Eligibility Criteria

All grant proposals should display and emphasize respect for the dignity of all persons. Programs submitted should be consistent with the principles espoused by the mission and core values of the Baptist Healing Trust. The Trust advocates:

  • Caring with a servant’s heart
  • Healing for the mind, body and spirit
  • Loving with respect and without reservation
  • Creating cultures of mindfulness, wisdom, justice and peace
  • Supporting sacred work
  • Inclusiveness

Our Statement of Inclusiveness: The mission of the Baptist Healing Trust is to be a caring ministry devoted to healing with love in the Christian tradition. Through our grant making programs, the Trust aims to increase access to quality, loving healthcare for vulnerable populations across Middle Tennessee. The Trust’s grant making policies reflect the belief that organizational performance is greatly enhanced when people with different backgrounds and perspectives are engaged in an organization’s activities and decision-making process. Thus, the Trust actively seeks to promote access, equity and inclusiveness, and to discourage discrimination based on race, creed, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and other factors that deny the essential humanity of all people. This principle is a lens through which all of the work of the Trust is viewed.

Grant Guidelines

In 2010, preference will be given to currently operating programs that demonstrate strong community need and ongoing sustainability as well as new programs or expansions where high community need has been documented.

Awards are generally granted on a year-to-year basis.

A limited number of programs may receive multi-year (two to three year) funding. Annual evaluation will occur, which may result in redirecting of funds. Multi-year requests should decrease in amount requested each subsequent year.

Grants typically range from $25,000 - $75,000 per year in order to maximize impact to the community.

A given organization typically will not receive more than one grant of a specific type per year. However, an organization can have two different types of grants simultaneously.

Awards are paid yearly 50% at the beginning of the term and 50% after the completion of a mid-term progress assessment.

The trust is unlikely to support proposals for:

  • Grants for the construction or renovation of building facilities
  • Grants to individuals and fraternal organizations
  • Grants to other grant-making organizations
  • Grants to support partisan politics, political lobbying, or electoral campaigns
  • Grants to single disease, research-oriented organizations

Applying For a Grant

Organizations interested in applying for a grant should follow these steps:

Stage One: Preliminary Application

Complete the Trust’s preliminary application to formally request funding. This form introduces both the applicant organization and the proposed project or program to the Trust. Please complete the Trust’s online form.

Shortly after its receipt, the program staff will respond to the applicant regarding the status of the preliminary application and next steps.

The Stage 1 Preliminary Applications have three parts:
  • Organization Information
  • Contact Information
  • Brief Project Description

Stage Two: Full Proposal

The Trust will notify applicants about how to proceed once a preliminary application has been received. Depending on the previous history with the Trust, applicants whose programs meet the criteria of the Trust will be asked to conduct a face to face meeting with the Trust or a phone conference. After this meeting, the staff will notify applicants when there is an interest in exploring the grant request further, and a full proposal will be requested. Full proposals should be completed via our secure online application process. Please only include materials requested by the Trust. Applicants must have a completed profile on GivingMatters™ by the full proposal deadline.

Requests that are Denied

The Trust receives a multitude of grant requests for worthwhile projects. Unfortunately, many of the requests are not funded simply because the demand exceeds the Trust's resources. A denial is not necessarily a reflection of the quality of the grant request or applicant organization.

Applicants are welcome to resubmit a grant request. However, before reapplying, it is advantageous to discuss with the reason for the initial denial with the appropriate member of the program staff.
