Sabbatical Grant

Sabbatical Grants provide support for a nonprofit organization during a period of Sabbatical for the nonprofit CEOs/EDs renewal. We give up to $25,000 for the salaries of interim staff, stateside travel, housing, and learning opportunities for the Executive Director/CEO. Learning opportunities can include personal/professional coaching, spiritual direction, management programs, retreats, and conferences. Requests for travel are limited to $5,000 of the maximum $25,000 request. The CEO/ED must have worked in a nonprofit for at least 7 years, with a at least 5 of those years as the CEO/ED. In addition to meeting our general eligibility requirements, Sabbatical Grant applicants must also:

  • show organizational sustainability and be financially stable
  • have received unrestricted operating funds from The Trust.
  • Guarantee continued full time employment status with on-going benefits provided during the period of leave.

  2. Indicate the Annual Budget for your organization.

  2. Indicate your organization’s Executive Director. This is your organization’s highest-ranking salaried position. Could also be titled President or CEO.

Brief Program Description

  1. How would you use the resources of a Sabbatical grant award and release time for personal development to enhance leadership, services, and operational effectiveness within your organization? Include specifics about your proposed activities or course of study and length of time. (800 words)

Measurable Outcome Statements

Use the PRoQOL tool at proqol.org/uploads/ProQOL_5_English.pdf to assess your current quality of life. Include those results with your proposal and project the change in score that you expect to achieve as result of the sabbatical.

Project Financial Information

  1. Budget Justification: Give a detailed description of what is included on each line item and how the totals per line item were reached. (1,250-word limit)
  2. Describe how your organization plans to institutionalize and sustain the practices that were put into place by this grant once the grant term is completed. For example, would additional sabbaticals be offered in the future and/or other staff be eligible for sabbatical even in absence of The Trust’s funding? (1,000-word limit)

We evaluate Sabbatical Grants based on responses to the following questions.

1. Does this agency employ programs that benefit the health of individuals in Middle Tennessee?

2. Does the intention of this project align between stated need of leader and The Trust mission to promote healing and wholeness?

3. Are the interim infrastructure and leadership present for the program to succeed?

4. Is the leadership, particularly the Board of Directors, committed to implementing this partnership program?

5. Is the pre-departure plan realistic and does it demonstrate the likelihood of organizational sustainability during the sabbatical?

6. Is the budget realistic and appropriate to the scope of the proposed program?
